News and Media in today's world

According to Miriam Webster, News is defined as " a report of recent events" (merriam-webster.com). It is the Media who reports these recent events. The Media is the channel and typically decides what news the people read or watch. Like any business the media has to make money in order to stay in business and this may cause some stories to be given more light than others. For instance currently Haiti is a large story across the globe and especially at home, and the tsunami in India although a large story had less coverage here at home. This may have to do with the fact of their different geographical locations, and the media may focus more on certain regions of the world. Today what we think of "Media" is changing, we used to think of media as newspapers, radio, and television, however today the internet to many is greater than the previous three. With the use of the media we have now seen the individuals of all backgrounds creating news via blogs, youtube, twitter, and other websites. Even national media companies such as CNN have adapted to the times for better or worse. CNN currently has a show where John King gets live comments from Tweets. Who is shaping our news today? is an important question and whether or not companies like CNN should be using opinions from tweeters. Today with the change in media, News is becoming more specific, news websites may only pertain to certain categories.
