Ethics in Journalism

Though the job of a journalist is to get the story and uncover the truth, journalist may face Ethical dilemmas.

Journalist may face what is called a conflict of interest. It may be hard but a journalist must not show any form of bias. A journalist must avoid choosing sides sides in conflicts or stories, this may be hard when the journalist has some sort of relationship to the story.

The journalist must also avoid any for of lying. No matter what a journalist can not lie even if it is to uncover a story. By lying the journalist may lose his/her credibility.

The greatest ethical issue is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of stealing someone else ideas or content. By doing this the journalist loses all credibility.

To avoid doing these things a journalist should use the Potter Box Model. The Potter Box Model has four elements which include, appraising the situation, identifying values, appealing to ethical principals and choosing loyalties.
