freedom of press

The first Amendment of the United States protects freedom of speech and freedom of the press, a freedom that has its limitations and for good reason.

The first Amendment allows journalist to say what they want and about who they want. The main limitation that comes into play is printing libel.

Libel is when an author publishes information about a person inaccurately and portrays that person in a negative light, harming their reputation.

The supreme court ruled that a person can only be punished if they print libel intentionally, which would be called malice. Malace is very hard to prove, especially the abundance of illegitimate sources found on the internet today.

The first Amendment allows people to speak out for what they believe to be right, without fear of being punished or silenced by the government. This is important because journalist help keep politicians in check, to not overuse thier power.
