PR vs. Writing News

Though they require similar writing skills and coherence, Public Relations is always focused internally on the company or organization that one is apart of. Journalists will focus solely on the story at hand, with no bias attached.

PR writers are concerned primarily with the message that their organization is trying to send. Good PR writing must have the audience in mind, so that mixed messages are not radiated and no supporters are lost. Public relations is a fragile operation but can yield beneficiary results, including continued support, customer/audience awareness, etc.

Good journalism is always objective, focusing on the facts and the way the story develops. Though PR and journalism share a similar goal (alerting the audience of a certain subject/issue/event), the style of writing is going to be quite different. It's very important for PR writers to keep these perspectives in mind when crafting releases or any text.
