They're Different?

News stories differ from feature stories in their purpose and message. News stories focus on reporting the recent facts, that alert the readers to news happening today, keeping them informed. Usually these stories appear in newspapers, websites and are reported on television, etc. They use strong or soft leads depending on the subject matter and typically answer the questions, who, what, when, where, why, and how within it. Then they will follow the inverted pyramid style giving the most important details of a story first and the lesser last.

Features are usually done on a specific subject, and are not necessarily on what is happening in the world. They are a more creative form of writing and do not have to follow inverted pyramid. When writing a feature about a person, they are usually done in a chronological order. Features will focus more on the details and the creative aspects.

They are both valuable to the world of journalism and a good reporter should be able to utilize both to be a good writer.
