Public Relations and You

Public relations is a different form of writing than that of which we have previously studied. PR is generally the branch of an organization who deals with the matters of people outside the company to try and create the best image and ultimately bring in the most business.

A Public Relations writer has the job of writing to a target audience in the community and making whoever they are writing for be put in a good light. When a company needs to look good for a potential client or group of investors, it is their public relations department who they turn to to build up their reputation through writing.

The way that PR writing differs from news writing and journalism is that in writing articles for media outlets, the writer usually tries to be as objective as possible, provides all the facts, and creates the writing for the general public to understand. Writing for public relations is different because the writing is usually biased towards whoever hires the writer, as it is supposed to increase the reputation of the subject. It also is mainly geared towards one specific audience, so the writing may also be more complex and sophisticated than a news article.
