Features v. News Stories

Despite what many people believe, features and news stories are both very different forms on media.

The purpose and message of features and News stories are very much different.

A news stories focuses in current events or happenings. A news story is about the newest detail in an event that is occurring. They are focused on keeping the public informed.

News stories can be read online, in newspapers, or watched on the television on daily news shows.

News stories begin with hard or soft leads, depending on what the writer decides. They are written in pyramid form, with the most important information at the top, answering the questions "Who?" "What?" "Where?" "When?" and "Why?"

Features focus on one subject, and are not always what is currently happening in the world. It could tell the story of something that has happened, or has been happening for a while.

Features are much more creative. They do not have to be written in a specific form, and are a little more entertaining than news stories, as well as more in depth.

News stories and features are both very important parts of journalism, when both writing and reporting.
